What is the Vimshottari Dasha System?
Vimshottari (Sanskrit: विंशोत्तरी — meaning "120") is the most widely used predictive timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides life into a repeating 120-year sequence of planetary periods called Dashas, each governed by one of the nine Jyotish planets: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), and Mercury (17).
The system is based on your Moon's position at birth — specifically which of the 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) the Moon occupied and how far through that Nakshatra it had traveled. This gives your starting Dasha planet and the remaining years in that first period.
Dasha Periods and Their Durations
The nine Mahadasha periods in sequence:

After Mercury ends, the cycle restarts with Ketu. Very few people live to experience all nine Mahadashas; most see four to six in a lifetime.
Mahadasha vs Antardasha vs Pratyantardasha
Mahadasha is the outermost major period. During a Mahadasha, the themes of that planet dominate life — its sign, house, and aspects shape the tenor of those years.
Antardasha (sub-period) divides each Mahadasha into nine sub-segments, one for each of the nine planets. The sub-period lord co-governs the theme. A Jupiter Mahadasha with a Saturn Antardasha tends to blend Jupiter's expansiveness with Saturn's discipline and delays — often producing structured growth after initial restriction.
Pratyantardasha (sub-sub-period) further subdivides each Antardasha. At this resolution, predictions become very precise — accurate to within weeks for timing significant events.
How to Interpret Your Current Dasha
To interpret any Dasha period, examine the Mahadasha lord's:
1. Natural significations — Jupiter rules wisdom, children, wealth, philosophy. Saturn rules career, discipline, longevity, karma. 2. House lordship — Which houses does the planet rule in your chart? Those life areas are activated. 3. House placement — Where does the planet sit? The themes of that house will be prominent. 4. Shadbala — A strong Mahadasha lord delivers clear, positive results. A weak one produces the themes but with friction, delays, or inconsistency. 5. Aspects — Benefic aspects from Jupiter or Venus ease the period; malefic aspects from Saturn or Rahu add challenge.
The Antardasha lord modifies the tone. The first and last sub-periods of any Mahadasha are transitional — powerful but sometimes turbulent as one planet's energy gives way to the next.
